About Us

Since 1986, Cardinal Hayes Home has provided planned periods of short-term relief to families in Dutchess County caring at home for a family member who is developmentally disabled. In this Community Respite Program, trained caregivers go into individual homes and give parents a day or evening break from the continual care of a son or daughter who has disabilities. All ages and income levels are served by the program.

Planned periods of respite help families cope with the day-to-day challenges of caring at home for a family member who is disabled. The program is able to assist approximately forty Dutchess County families annually. Due to demand and limited funding, there is usually a waiting list of those seeking respite. The hours are funded through Medicaid Waiver Services for which there is an eligibility and enrollment process. For information regarding this program, contact Respite Services Coordinator, Jean Weinel, MSW at 845-677-6363.

The Group Activities Program (GAP) operates during breaks in the school calendar (e.g., Christmas, spring and summer vacations). The program provides recreational opportunities for children who are developmentally disabled and gives their families respite for several days during school breaks. Under the supervision of experienced staff, a wide range of structured activities takes place at the agency’s attractive and well-equipped educational center: Cardinal Hayes School for Special Children.

For more information about this program, please contact Jean Weinel, MSW, Respite Services Coordinator, at 845-677-6363.

The WATCH Program (Work Activities Training at Cardinal Hayes) was established in 1996 in response to the need for an appropriate day program for several of the young adults at Cardinal Hayes Home. With a present capacity of twelve, the program is designed to meet the individual needs of young people who are developmentally disabled but display a willingness and ability to achieve certain goals in work training.

The young adults in Watch are given the opportunity to develop suitable work habits and social behaviors through work activities such as helping deliver campus mail, stocking beverage machines and recycling. Also included in the program is a commercial engraving shop where trophies, plaques, key ring tags and other engraved items are produced. Under supervision, the clients in Watch have learned to make these products, filling orders from area businesses and organizations. The WATCH program is under the supervision of Ms. Mary Campbell, Director of Habilitative Services.
